Renault launched the Renault eco2 signature in May 2007 to identify its most ecological and economical vehicles.
The signature reflects Renault's aim to inform customers of the environmental progress it has made across the vehicle life cycle in the last 10 years. Renault eco2 vehicles fulfil three ecological criteria in production, CO2 emissions and recycling.
Production: ISO 14001 plants
Renault eco2 vehicles are produced at ISO 14001-certified plants. This standard rewards the progress made by manufacturing sites in reducing water and energy consumption and in cutting waste production and atmospheric and noise emissions.
CO2 emissions: less than 140 g/km
Renault eco2 vehicles emit less than 140 g/km of CO2. Some Renault eco2 vehicles can run on biofuels, made from plant matter.
Vehicles containing recycled plastic
Renault eco2 vehicles have to contain at least 5% recycled plastic. They are also designed so that 95% of their mass can be recovered at end-of-life, and thus begin a second existence.
12 Renault models have EuroNCAP 5 star safety ratings.
Renault believes that everybody is entitled to safety and it was a pioneer in scientific accident research. Its approach is based on a global vision, tailored to all individuals, combining technical innovation and education.
Renault, a forerunner in accidentology
A pioneer in safety, Renault founded the Physiology and Biomechanics Laboratory in 1954 to study the effects of accidents. Fifteen years later, in partnership with PSA Peugeot Citroën, it created the LAB (Laboratory for Accidentology, Biomechanics and the Study of Human Behaviour).
The laboratory employs doctors, engineers, psychologists and sociologists, working in close cooperation. It carries out detailed studies of accidents and human behaviour in emergency situations, along with real and virtual crash tests. These efforts show Renault to be a front-runner in accidentology.
Safety applied to vehicles
In March 2004, Renault set up a road safety policy department. Using the findings of LAB studies, the 600-strong workforce develops driving aids: emergency brake assistance, stability control, airbags, force limiters, etc. Every year, Renault invests almost £100 million in safety R&D.
Renault has the safest range of vehicles on the market. Laguna was the first car ever to achieve the maximum 5-star rating in Euro NCAP tests. Today, 12 Renault vehicles have 5-star ratings, including New Grand Scénic and New Mégane Hatch.
Safety for all
As a result of the studies carried out on real accidents over many years, safety - both active and passive – has become a fundamental component of Renault vehicles.
In new markets, Renault adapts its vehicles to local accident mechanisms, which are not the same as in Europe. Logan is one of the safest vehicles on the road in these countries.
The Group is also setting up teams of researchers specializing in accidentology in all the countries where it is present: in Romania with RTR (Renault Technologie Roumanie), and soon in India (Chennai site) and Brazil (Curitiba site).
The Group is also extending safety systems to all its vehicles. In 2006, Renault became the first vehicle manufacturer to fit emergency brake assist (EBA) on all its vehicles.
